Preliminary Sept. U. of Mich. Index at 85.7 vs. 91.9 in Aug.

The University of Michigan's preliminary September consumer sentiment index reading was 85.7, compared to the final August 91.9, and the preliminary August 92.9, according to market sources.

The expectations index was 76.4, compared to the final August 83.4, and the preliminary August 83.8.

The current conditions index was 100.3, compared to the final August 105.1, and the preliminary August 107.1.

Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted a 91.5 reading for the main index, 103.6 for current conditions, and 82.7 for expectations.

The five-year inflation expectation index was 2.8%, compared to 2.7% in August, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 2.9%, compared to 2.8% in August.

The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
