The University of Michigan's preliminary October consumer sentiment index reading was 92.1, compared to the final September 87.2, and the preliminary September 85.7, according to market sources.
The expectations index was 82.7, compared to the final September 78.2, and the preliminary September 76.4.
The current conditions index was 106.7, compared to the final September 101.2, and the preliminary September 100.3, and the final August 105.1.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted an 88.7 reading for the main index, 101.5 for current conditions, and 78.2 for expectations.
The five-year inflation expectation index was 2.6%, compared to 2.7% in September, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 2.7%, compared to 2.8% in September.
The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
