The University of Michigan's preliminary January consumer sentiment index reading was 93.3, compared to the final December 92.6, and the preliminary December 91.8, according to market sources.
The expectations index was 85.7, compared to the final December 82.7, and the preliminary December 82.0.
The current conditions index was 105.1, compared to the final December 108.1, and the preliminary December 107.0.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted a 93.0 reading for the main index, 82.8 for expectations and 107.3 for current conditions.
The five-year inflation expectation index was 2.7%, compared to 2.6% in December, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 2.4%, compared to 2.6% in December.
The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
