WASHINGTON - Housing starts fell 0.3% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 628,000 in October from the revised estimate of 630,000 for September, the Commerce Department reported Thursday.
Building permits surged 10.9% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 653,000 last month from the revised September rate of 589,000.
The October starts rate was above the median 610,000 projected by economists polled by Thomson Reuters and was 16.5% above the October 2010 rate of 539,000.
The building permits rate was much higher than the median 600,000 projected by the economists and was 17.7% above the October 2010 rate of 555,000.
