'No’ on Polk Courthouse Tax

Voters in Polk County last week in a special election rejected a $132 million bond referendum that would have raised property taxes to finance renovations to the county’s courthouse and construction of an eight-story annex.

Supporters argued that the current space is overcrowded and in need of repairs. The measure also would allow the county to maintain the historic building and save money that now goes to lease space in other buildings.

Opponents said Polk County should first retire bonds issued to finance a convention center complex and improvements to the county-owned racetrack and casino. Supporters could seek to ask voters on the November ballot to support the plan or a revised one, but no decision has been made, according to published reports.

The referendum question failed, with 17,603 opposed and 13,453 in favor. A 60% majority was needed for approval.
