Albuquerque used $630,000 of proceeds from general obligation bonds dedicated to the preservation of open space to purchase 63 acres for preservation as wildlife habitat. The bonds were part of the city's 2005 authorization.
The city purchased the land in Tijeras Canyon from Hawkwatch International, a Utah-based group dedicated to the conservation of hawks, eagles, and other wild raptors. The property also will provide public access to the federal Sandia Mountain Wilderness area.
The city's Open Space Division will manage the area.
