McKinney Named Treasurer

Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius has appointed House Minority Leader Dennis McKinney, D-Greensburg, to replace Lynn Jenkins as state treasurer. Jenkins is going to Washington after defeating Democrat Rep. Nancy Boyda for the Second District seat in Congress in the Nov. 4 election.

McKinney, 48, has been minority leader since 2002. He will serve the final two years of Jenkins’ four-year term.

At a news conference, Sebelius said McKinney was familiar with state budget issues.

“He’s a strong leader who cares about the obstacles Kansans face and his perspective will be very beneficial as we navigate through this time of financial adversity,” the governor said.

The state treasurer earns $86,000 a year.

McKinney’s replacement will be chosen by Democratic leaders in his district.
