Durable Goods Orders Fall 5.1% in Dec.; Ex-Transportation Off 1.2%

U.S. durable goods orders slumped 5.1% in December, while excluding transportation orders were down 1.2%, the Commerce Department reported Thursday.

Economists polled by Thomson Reuters expected a 0.3% decrease in orders and a 0.2% drop excluding transportation.

In November, orders fell a revised 0.5%, first reported as a flat level, while excluding transportation sales slid 0.5%, initially reported as a 0.1% dip.

Excluding defense orders declined 2.9% in December after a 2.0% decrease in November.
