The University of Michigan’s preliminary January consumer sentiment index reading was 61.9 compared to the final December 60.1 reading, the preliminary December 59.1 reading, and the final November 55.3 reading, according to market sources.

Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted a 59.0 reading.
