Metro-North Completes New Hamburg, N.Y., Bridge

Metro-North Railroad completed construction of the Bridge Street Bridge in New Hamburg, N.Y., 75 miles north of New York City.

The New York State Department of Transportation funded 80% of the $5.7 million project and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's capital program covered the balance. Metro-North is an MTA unit.

The old bridge, built in 1930 to cross the Hudson Line tracks, had a load limit of 15 tons, which prevented fire trucks, oil tankers from a nearby business and school buses from using it. The new bridge has no load limit.

Work, which began 18 months ago, included drainage improvements on both approach roadways and a brand-new, 18-inch water main, installed for the Town of Poughkeepsie.

"This much-needed investment provides better access to the train station and frees up commuter parking spaces under the old bridge that had been closed because of the danger of falling concrete," said James Sedore, longtime Dutchess County representative to the MTA board and chairman of its Metro-North Railroad Committee.
