U.S. Government Ran $55.2 Billion Surplus in Jan.

The federal government ran a $55.2 billion budget surplus in January, the Treasury Department reported Wednesday.

The January surplus followed a $64.6 billion budget deficit in November.

The December deficit was larger than the median $11.0 billion deficit predicted by economists polled by Thomson Reuters.

Outlays in December totaled $364.075 billion. Receipts totaled $349.631 billion.

In December 2014, the government ran a $1.9 billion surplus.
