New orders for manufactured goods dropped 10.1% in August, after climbing an unrevised 10.5% in July, the Commerce Department reported Thursday.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters expected a 9.3% plunge in August orders.
Excluding transportation, new orders decreased 0.1% in August, after declining a revised 0.7% the previous month, first reported as a 0.8% drop. Excluding defense, orders slumped 10.3%, after a 1.3% increase in July.
Durable goods orders plunged 18.4% after a 22.5% increase in July, while nondurable goods orders fell 0.4% after a 0.8% drop in July.
