Sacramento's Johnson To Helm U.S. Conference of Mayors

WASHINGTON — Sacramento, Calif. Mayor Kevin Johnson will become the new president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors when he is sworn in April 16, the group announced Thursday.

Johnson will succeed Mesa, Ariz. Mayor Scott Smith, who is leaving the post early because he is required by local law to resign as Mesa's chief executive now that he has announced his candidacy for governor of Arizona. Johnson, who is currently the vice president of the USCM, will serve the remainder of Smith's term that would have ended in June. He will then serve a full one-year term ending in June 2015.

"It is a privilege and an honor to serve in this role, representing the nation's mayors," Johnson said in a statement. "Mayors are at the helm of America's cities and represent the best of this country developing innovative, pragmatic solutions to the challenges they face. I look forward to learning from them while delivering results for Sacramento."

Johnson will provide over his first official meeting in June, when the group meets for its 82nd Annual Meeting in Dallas, Texas.
