Anchorage Voters Approve Six Bond Measures

LOS ANGELES - Voters in Anchorage, Alaska approved six out of seven bond measures in last week's municipal elections, according to unofficial election results.

The six measures authorize $84.4 million of general obligation bonds to fund a variety of construction and renovation projects throughout the city.

The largest bond measure is Proposition 1, providing $57.2 million for school districts capital projects.

The proposition passed with 58% of the vote.

Proposition 2, which passed with 62%, is a $1.8 million safety and public transportation capital improvement bond. Proceeds would go toward buying ambulances, undertaking school zone safety improvements and bridge and dam rehabilitation, and providing matching funds for public transportation upgrades.

A $2.6 million bond measure also passed, with 56% of the vote. Proceeds from Proposition 4 would help the Parks and Recreation Department improve parks and trails and make various upgrades in the service area.

The second largest bond measure that passed was Proposition 5, which authorizes $20.2 million of debt for road and storm drainage acquisition, construction, renovation, and upgrades.

Two more measures to fund fire and police improvements, Propositions 6 and 7, respectively, also passed with around 68% of the vote.

Under these measures, a total of around $2.7 million of GO bonds would be authorized to replace fire trucks and to upgrade air-conditioning systems at the Anchorage Police Department headquarters.

The only bond measure to fail was Proposition 3, a $5.5 million bond to cover a planned renovation of a library and work at City Hall, a city golf course, and a sports complex.

The city's outstanding debt, which totaled around $441.7 million as of December 31, is rated AAA by Standard & Poor's and AA-plus by Fitch Ratings.
