Posinelli Shortens Its Name

Posinelli Shugart PC will shorten the law firm name to Posinelli PC, reflecting its national presence, effective late April.

The firm has added over 150 attorneys in the four years since it merged with Shughart Thomson in February 2009 including the addition of Quateman LLP, California's biggest women-owned municipal bond counsel firm in June 2011.

"Public finance is a fairly recent, but growing part of the practice," said Russ Welsh, the firm's chairman. "While it represents only 1% to 2% of our revenue currently, we plan on adding to the practice as we have with many others over the past few years."

The firm had doubled in size in the past four years, growing to 630 attorneys in 16 cities, including Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Kansas City, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, St. Louis and Washington D.C., Welsh said.

The firm has four or five public finance lawyers in Chicago and Kansas City in addition to its L.A. presence, he said.

The California Treasurer's office admitted Polsinelli into the state's bond counsel pool in July 2011 - just a month after it acquired Quateman.

"While our legacy firms and our history provides our foundation, we have become more than the sum of our parts," Welsh said. "Most importantly, we are all one firm today and our clients already refer to us as Posinelli," said chairman Russ Welsh.

This decision reflects branding trends in legal and other professional services, said chief marketing officer Allison Yurman in a statement.

"From a strategic point of view, building brand equity around one name is more viable, and this change leverages existing name awareness by focusing on the shorthand already in use by clients," Yurman said.

For 2012, Posinelli ranked 164 among bond counsel with issuance of $271.3 million in par value, 67 among underwriters counsel with $948.4 million in par value and ranked 36 among disclosure counsel with $499.6 million in issuance, according to data from Thomson Reuters.
