Trolling for Stadium Bonds

Louisiana State University supervisors will consider a request Friday for $100 million of revenue bonds to add seats at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge.

The project proposed by the not-for-profit Tiger Athletic Foundation would increase the stadium’s capacity to approximately 100,000 from the current 92,542.

Athletic director Joe Alleva said the additional capacity is needed to meet rising demand for football tickets.

If the board approves the request, it would be the third major expansion of LSU’s stadium since 2000. The proposal must also be approved by the Louisiana State Bond Commission.

The bonds would be sold through the Louisiana Public Facilities Authority, which issued $90 million of revenue bonds in 2004 for a similar effort by the Tiger Athletic Foundation.

The debt would be supported with the foundation’s revenues from the lease of approximately 60 new suites and licensing fees on another 3,000 club seats in the south end zone.
