LAX Overhauled

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Wednesday celebrated the completion of a $737 million project to renovate the Tom Bradley International Terminal at Los Angeles International Airport.

The largely revenue bond-financed project was the airport’s first major improvement to passenger facilities since the 1984 Olympics.

The three-year projects included major interior renovations; an improved customs and immigration arrivals hall; an in-line baggage screening system; and two aircraft gates that can accommodate the recently operational Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger plane.

The work isn’t really over at the Bradley terminal — three months ago, Villaraigosa was there for the groundbreaking of the $1.5 billion “Bradley West” project, which will add nine more international gates.

All the upgrade work has caused the Los Angeles Department of Airports to ramp up its bond market activity. The enterprise sold $930 million in airport revenue bonds in March.
