Revenue Picture Fading

State tax collections in February totaled $239 million, the Kansas Department of Revenue said last week, about $12 million less than expected. Monthly totals have been less than predicted since fiscal 2009 began July 1.

The Legislative Research Department earlier said that the state would have a $654 million deficit if the current budget were to be carried forward in fiscal 2010.

The latest decline should result in an even larger projected shortfall when the department issues an official report on February collections this week.
