The Norman City Council is considering a special bond election in March that would provide $21.3 million for street repairs and an upgraded storm-warning system.
The Oklahoma City suburb is tentatively considering a March 2 election for the two five-year bond proposals.
The bonds would provide $19 million of proceeds for street work, including $8.3 million for asphalt rehabilitation, $4 million for concrete pavement improvements, $4 million for road construction, and $2.3 million for several rural road projects.
The city also wants to spend $2.3 million to increase the number of outdoor warning sirens to 74 units from the current 38, which cover only about half of the city.
The new sirens would cost $1.7 million, or about $30,000 each. Other expenses associated with the upgraded warning system include $170,000 to move existing sirens, $100,000 for the land needed for system expansion, and $55,000 for new control station hardware and software.
