Vikings Plan Advances

The Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission late last week advanced plans for a new Vikings stadium by naming an architect and construction manager for a feasibility study that will include a cost estimate for the project.

The stadium would be built on the current site of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis. The National Football League’s Vikings currently share the dome with the Minnesota Twins and the University of Minnesota Gophers, but construction of new homes for those two teams is currently underway.

The Minnesota Legislature has in recent years approved financing packages for the Twins and Gophers facilities, while a plan that could win lawmakers’ approval has proved elusive for the Vikings.

HKS Inc. was named the designer and Mortensen Construction Co. the builder for the feasibility study that should be done early next year. The sports commission owns and operates the Metrodome. Mortensen is already managing the construction of the Twins and Gophers stadiums. The commission and the Vikings would use the study to craft a financing plan that likely would need legislative approval.
