Nichols, a partner, is the first transactional bond attorney in the firm’s Atlanta office, which opened last year.

He is representing issuers, underwriters and financial institutions in financings for state and local governments, health care systems and higher education institutions, the firm said.

“We are delighted that an accomplished lawyer like Matt Nichols will be spearheading Parker Poe’s public finance efforts in Georgia,” said Don Ubell, a partner and member of the firm’s public finance group. “His practice will mesh well with our existing practice in the Carolinas in general government, higher education and health care finance.”

Nichols most recently worked for Eversheds Sutherland LLP, formerly Sutherland Asbill & Brennan.

With more than two decades of experience in Georgia, he has been bond counsel in public finance and public private partnerships, with a focus on health care, higher education, energy, and transportation.

Nichols is a member of the National Association of Bond Counsel and a fellow in the American College of Bond Counsel.

Former Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue appointed him to the Public Finance Options Task Force of the Commission for a New Georgia in 2004.

Nichols is also the immediate past chairman of the Georgia Wildlife Federation’s board of directors.

He received both a bachelor of business administration degree and a law degree from the University of Georgia.

Parker Poe said that with the addition of Nichols the firm has 13 attorneys in its nationally ranked Tier 1 public finance group, which is continuing to expand in Georgia and elsewhere.

Overall, the firm has 200 lawyers in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina as well as a satellite location in Washington, D.C., providing legal counsel to large commercial and public organizations on litigation, corporate and regulatory matters.
