Retail sales rose 2.3% in the week ended Jan. 22, as cold, snowy weather and a long weekend helped winter merchandise sales, according to the Johnson Redbook Retail Sales Index, which was released Tuesday.
The report was named “Some retailers said consumers are back in a penny-pinching mood” and that title seemed borne out by the ICSC-Goldman Sachs Weekly Chain Store Sales Snapshot released Tuesday. It said chain store sales declined 1.2% in the week.
Year-over-year chain store sales improved 2.8%, according to ICSC-Goldman.
