Brian O’Neill has been named the new executive director of the New Mexico Sports Authority by Gov. Bill Richardson, who said he wants O’Neill to move along plans for a sports arena in Bernalillo County.

O’Neill had been the authority’s deputy director since July 2006.

“I am charging Brian with developing a proposal for a multipurpose arena in Bernalillo County,” the governor said in announcing the appointment.

O’Neill has been an assistant coach for the University of New Mexico’s women’s basketball team and an assistant men’s basketball coach at Baylor University.
