John Provenzano announced in an email to friends Wednesday he is starting a new job June 12 as vice government relations for Publix Super Markets, which he noted is headquartered near his hometown of Tampa, Fla. Publix is based about 36 miles away in Lakeland, Fla.

“I don’t think there will be any changes’’ in policy, Provenzano said in a phone interview. Starting Thursday his job at NAST will be temporarily handled by NAST Deputy Executive Director Chris Hunter.

Provenzano’s email said Hunter “will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the organization and will remain in that role until a new executive director is in place,’’ adding that “NAST will be in good hands under his leadership.’’

NAST’s federal priorities, according to its website, have included protecting the tax-exempt status of municipal bonds and supporting legislation ensuring municipal securities are considered level 2A high-quality liquid assets under banking regulators' liquidity rules. The association also supports financial literacy programs for the general public, proposed improvements in 529 College Saving Plans and work on implementation of the ABLE Act savings plan for the disabled.

Provenzano has been executive director of NAST for two-and-a-half years and started up its Washington, D.C. office after previously working at Delta Air Lines as its director of government relations.

NAST is headquartered in Lexington, Ky. Members include state treasurers and state finance officials in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. commonwealths and territories.
