Kaine Allocates Stimulus

Virginia Gov. Timothy Kaine last week announced that $1.6 billion from the more than $4 billion the state expects to receive from the federal stimulus package would be allocated to education, public safety, and transportation needs.

He also appointed a working group to evaluate proposed projects, which are available for public review at www.stimulus.Virginia.gov.

“As we begin to allocate Recovery Act funds, it is important that citizens are kept informed about how their money is being used,” Kaine said in a statement.

K-12 education will receive $730.4 million. The state is also receiving $281.4 million for special education. About $39.8 million will go toward local law enforcement.

Virginia will receive about $694.5 million of highway funds, $118 million of which will be for projects selected by the state’s three urban metropolitan planning organizations and another $116 million will be distributed to transit operators in Virginia.
