Garth Rieman is interim executive director of National Council of State Housing Agencies

WASHINGTON -- Garth Rieman has been named interim executive director of the National Council of State Housing Agencies.

Rieman takes over from Barbara Thompson, who served as executive director for the last 16 years and left the organization at the end of 2017 after 30 years with the group.

"Last summer, Barbara decided to step down at the end of the year," spokeswoman Lisa Bowman said in an email. "She’s taking some well-deserved time off right now."

Rieman has worked for NCSHA for almost 25 years, most recently serving as director of housing advocacy and strategic initiatives.

Rieman graduated from Pomona College in California with a B.A. degree in public policy and from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government with a Master of Public Policy.

He previously worked for the Senate Banking Committee's housing subcommittee for four years. Before that he was a housing and community development analyst at the National Association of Realtors for a year, and a special assistant at the Department of Housing and Urban Development for year. He also was a budget examiner at the U.S. Office of Management and Budget for two years.
