Dromm to take helm of NYC Council’s finance committee

New York City Councilmember Daniel Dromm will take over as Chair of the finance committee, assuming a key role in budget negotiations with the mayor’s office.

Dromm replaces Julissa Ferris-Copeland, who chose not to seek re-election to the City Council last year.

“Being Finance Committee Chair gives me the opportunity to set priorities for the city using the vast resources available to us,” Dromm said in a Twitter Tweet on Thursday. “I intend to use this position to move a progressive budget forward, working closely with [City Council Speaker Corey Johnson] who I thank for giving me this opportunity to serve.”

Dromm was first elected to the Council in 2009 and represents District 25 in Queens. He was formerly chair of the Council’s education committee.

Before entering public service, he was a public school teacher in Queens and was the founder of the Queens Lesbian and Gay Pride Committee. He graduated from Marist College and got a master’s degree at City College. He currently lives in Jackson Heights.

The panel also has jurisdiction over the city’s Banking Commission, Department of Design and Construction, Department of Finance, Independent Budget Office, and Office of the Comptroller. Also serving on the committee are Councilmembers Keith Powers, Helen Rosenthal, Andrew Cohen, Vanessa L. Gibson, Francisco Moya, Barry Grodenchik, Rory I. Lancman, Jimmy Van Bramer, Adrienne E. Adams, Laurie A. Cumbo, Robert E. Cornegy Jr., and Steven Matteo.

Serving on the Finance Committee’s Subcommittee on Capital Budget are Councilmembers Gibson as Chair, and Powers, Rosenthal, Grodenchik and Matteo.
