Consumer sentiment much higher than expected in first February read

The University of Michigan's preliminary February consumer sentiment index reading was 99.9, compared to the final January 95.7 and the preliminary January 94.4, according to market sources.

The expectations index was 90.2, compared to the final January 86.3 and the preliminary January 84.8.

The current conditions index was 115.1, compared to the final January 110.5 and the preliminary January 109.2.

Economists polled by IFR Markets had predicted a 95.5 reading for the main index, 84.5 for expectations and 112.0 for current conditions.

The five-year inflation expectation index was 2.5%, compared to 2.5% in January, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 2.7%, compared to 2.7% in January.

The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
