Chain Store Sales Rise 0.6% in Sept. 22 Week

Chain store sales were 0.6% better in the week ended Sept. 22 than they were a week earlier, and also improved 2.9% for a year ago, according to the ICSC-Goldman Sachs Weekly Chain Store Sales Snapshot released Tuesday.

"Last week retailers saw an improvement in customer traffic, which helped to lift weekly sales overall," said Michael Niemira, ICSC vice president of research and chief economist.  "Though the economic cross-currents continue within the industry, gasoline prices have finally receded after 11 weeks and in time could help discretionary spending, especially as the industry heads into the holiday shopping season," Niemira added.
