Jobless claims come off 49-year low

WASHINGTON — Initial jobless claims rose by 9,000 to 217,000 in the July 21 week after dipping to their lowest point since 1969 in the previous week.

The four-week moving average fell by 2,750 to 218,000 in July 21 week, and would be expected to fall by 3,750 next week, all else being equal.

Continuing claims fell by 8,000 to 1.745 million in the July 14 week, down 38,000 from the level in the June 16 survey week.
