The results from last week's school bond election in Leavenworth are now official.

Leavenworth County commissioners certified the results when they met Tuesday.

County Clerk Janet Klasinski reviewed the vote totals from the election with the commissioners, who were acting as the Board of County Canvassers.

Voters in the Leavenworth school district approved the $36.7 million bond issue by a vote of 2,670 (57.6%) to 1,956 (42.2%).

Mail-in ballots were used for the election instead of traditional poll locations. Ballots had to be returned to the County Clerk's Office by Friday.

Klasinski said her office mailed out 14,438 ballots. Voters returned 4,632 ballots.

"We had about a 35% turnout," she said.

She said 1,214 ballots were returned to her office by the U.S. Postal Service as undeliverable because voters had moved or other reasons.

Because mail-in ballots were used, Klasinski said there were no provisional ballots to be considered Tuesday.

With the passage of the bond issue, Earl Lawson Elementary School will close as an elementary school and the facility will be converted into an early childhood center for the district's prekindergarten and kindergarten classes, according to district officials.

Fifth-grade classes will be moved to Richard Warren Middle School, which will receive an addition.

The bond issue will also pay for other renovations in the district, including a new security entrance at Leavenworth High School.
