WASHINGTON — The National Governors Association has hired Scott Pattison to be its new executive director and chief executive officer.

Pattison will start his new position on Dec. 1. He has been executive director of the National Association of State Budget Officers since 2001. Prior to that, he worked in Virginia state government and at the Federal Trade Commission, according to a news release issued Monday.

Pattison has a law degree from the University of Virginia and a bachelor's degree from the George Washington University.

"I am honored to be selected to serve the nation's governors," Pattison said. "Innovative solutions to today's most pressing public policy challenges are happening at the state level. I'm excited to join this critical organization to work with governors and the NGA staff to ensure states and the federal government are working together to reach positive results."

NGA chair and Utah Gov. Gary Herbert said that "Scott's experience and broad knowledge of the various fiscal conditions affecting states will be a great benefit to governors and our staff."

As NGA executive director, Pattison will replace Dan Crippen, whose new plans have not yet been announced.

"Whether leading the way in education, improving health care quality and costs or developing a skilled workforce, states continue to demonstrate that they are truly where the action takes place," Crippen said. "It is because of this work that I chose to stay five years instead of the three for which I originally agreed. It has been a privilege to serve the nation's governors and to work with the great NGA staff. I know Scott will continue the more than 100 year tradition of governors leading the way."
