R.I. Treasurer to Chair NAST Financial Literacy Panel

Rhode Island General Treasurer Seth Magaziner has been named 2016 financial literacy committee chairman for the National Association of State Treasurers.

"Far too many people don't have the financial education they need to navigate the complex financial system," Magaziner said in a Feb. 2 statement.

The committee seeks to support state treasurers' initiatives related to personal money management that will empower all people with tools necessary to make smart financial decisions.

Magaziner, in his second year as treasurer, has launched such initiatives as the Rhode Island Financial Scholars Program partnership education technology company Everfi.

According to Magaziner, participating students have increased scores on assessments on such topics as banking, credit scores, financing higher education, renting versus owning a home, insurance and taxes, consumer protection and investing.

Magaziner also serves on the national association's pension and debt management committees.
