LOS ANGELES — Reno, Nev., officials conducted a special budget workshop July 15 in an attempt to plug a $2 million budget hole created when a judge filed an injunction on June 24 preventing the city from laying off 33 firefighters.

Washoe County District Judge Lidia Stiglich granted a preliminary injunction in the lawsuit between International Association of Firefighters Local 731 and Reno, according to the city's website.

City officials had approved laying off the firefighters on July 1 when it adopted its fiscal year 2014-15 budget on May 20.

The city had already conducted two budget workshops prior to adoption of the budget.

Changes that have occurred have shaved down to 21 the number of firefighters the city has to find funding for by cutting $2 million from other budget categories. One firefighter retired and 11 others volunteered for an early retirement program that was approved by the city council to help mitigate the financial effect of the proposed layoffs.
