CHICAGO – St. Petersburg, Fla.-based Raymond James is re-establishing an on-the-ground public finance banking presence in Michigan to supplement its retail brokerage operations.

Brodie Killian joined the firm as a senior vice president this month. The specialist in school district and higher education financing most recently worked at William Blair & Co. Brodie is returning to the firm where he worked earlier in his career. The firm has a trading desk in Grosse Pointe.

While Killian will focus his attention on Michigan-based issues, he will also assist Raymond James' specialty bankers with large issuers, higher education and healthcare institutions in Michigan and in other states, the firm said.

Killian brings both issuer and banking experience having previously served as deputy superintendent of business and operations at Plymouth-Canton Community Schools.

"Brodie's diverse experience in and knowledge of the Michigan K-14 sector will be a tremendous advantage to our clients in need of unique and innovative solutions to their financing needs," the firm's co-head of public finance, Gavin Murrey, said in a statement.

"As we continue to expand our education public finance practice, the addition of senior experienced bankers like Brodie is key to helping us reach our goal of providing unmatched service and attention to our issuer clients," he added.

Killian said the firm's retail strengths provided a draw. "The firm's robust and historical retail brokerage presence in the state of Michigan is also arguably the strongest of any other firm operating here today," he said.

Killian joined William Blair in 2014 after two years in the Plymouth Canton district's administration. Previously, he worked as a financial advisor at Morgan Stanley and as a banker at Stifel Nicolaus. He did a stint earlier in his career as a senior quantitative analyst and junior banker at Raymond James in Michigan.
