Public Hearing Scheduled on MBTA Overhaul Bill

The Massachusetts legislature's joint committee on transportation scheduled a May 27 public hearing on Gov. Charlie Baker's bill to overhaul the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.

The hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Tufts University in Medford.

On May 21 the state Senate approved a measure calling for a fiscal control panel to oversee the MBTA for three to five years. Three of the five panel members would come from the Baker-appointed Massachusetts Department of Transportation board, including state Transportation Secretary Stephanie Pollack.

Baker, who last month replaced the MBTA board, wants to expand that board from seven to 11 members.

MBTA operations came under white-hot political glare during a winter in which state capital Boston sustained a record 109 inches of snow, forcing officials to occasionally shut down the system.
