PRASA Board Fires the Authority's President

The board of the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority Friday fired the authority's president, Alberto Lázaro Castro, responding to Puerto Rico Governor-Elect Ricardo Rossell- stated wishes for his departure.

In 2012 the board had approved the president's employment from Jan. 2, 2013 to Jan. 1, 2019. On Friday the authority announced that the board decided to end Lázaro Castro's employment effective Dec. 31.

The board said that the termination was "not related to the performance of engineer Lázaro" and praised his performance leading PRASA, according to a PRASA release.

Instead the board referred to a "lack of trust and lack of communication channels between the current president and the governor-elect, which could affect the interests and objectives of the authority."

Rossell- and important members of his incoming administration have repeatedly called for Lázaro Castro's resignation in the last week or two, according to accounts in the El Vocero news website. They have said that the Rossell-'s election was partly due to a desire to see changes in the islands' public corporations.

PRASA has $4 billion of bond debt outstanding and has been making its scheduled bond payments.
