Port Authority Launches Dashboard for Capital Projects

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has launched a dashboard on its website providing quarterly updates on all active capital projects.

Part of an effort to improve transparency, the dashboard provides cost and schedule information for 372 active projects in the 2015 capital budget that is part of the Port Authority's 10-year $27.6 billion capital plan adopted last year. The main feature of the dashboard is a list of all active projects with original scheduled completion date and cost as well as the current cost and timeline details. It also provides information on projects that have potential for cost overruns or schedule delays.

The dashboard, announced on June 2, resulted from a recommendation in December's Special Panel on the Future of the Port Authority report. The panel was commissioned by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to enhance transparency at the agency following public scrutiny over the September 2013 traffic jams on the George Washington Bridge in possible retaliation against the mayor of Fort Lee, N.J. for not endorsing Christie.

"It's critical that we continue to provide as much information about our capital program as we can if we are to continue to rebuild the public's trust in this agency," said Port Authority Executive Director Pat Foye in a statement. "This dashboard is another tangible way for the public to measure how we're doing in our investments to modernize and maintain the region's airport terminals, bridges, tunnels, seaport and PATH system."

The Port Authority also announced last month it would be making public interim financial statements available on a quarterly basis. This includes financial information that covers the agency's facilities, operations and holdings.
