Planners to Discuss New Fulton Center Complex

Key players in the design and construction of the Fulton Center transit hub in downtown New York will discuss the $1.4 billion megaproject at a New York Transit Museum program on Oct. 29.

"The MTA's Next Big Thing: Fulton Center" will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the National Grid Auditorium at One Metrotech Center in downtown Brooklyn. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

The program will include James Carpenter of James Carpenter Design Associates, Mahadev Rahman of ARUP, and Niko Dando-Haenisch of Grimshaw Architects, all involved with the design and construction of the Fulton Center in lower Manhattan. Architect Sherida Paulsen, a principal with PKSB, will moderate.

According to officials from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the long-delayed $1.4 billion transit station in lower Manhattan will open at 5 a.m. Nov. 10, with a ceremony scheduled for the previous day.

The new station will link 10 subway lines and provide many shops and eateries for commuters. A retail component is scheduled to open later. Conceived after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, it is intended to relieve commuters from a mind-boggling maze of passageways and ramps.
