Averil Smith, a CPA with more than 23 years of private sector financial experience, has been tapped as the new comptroller for the Town of North Hempstead on Long Island.

Smith will lead the finances of New York's fifth largest township after previously holding positions as controller at MZ Berger, Inc., a watch manufacturing company, and at ABC Home Furnishings. She also spent over a decade in various audit roles including nearly three years at accounting giant Ernst & Young.

The North Hempstead comptroller job has been vacant since Kathleen Mitterway resigned from the role in August 2014. Smith is scheduled to begin her comptroller position after Labor Day.

"My administration is committed to fiscal stability and I am confident that Averil can lead our comptroller's office with the conservative eye necessary to keep the Town on a strong financial foundation," said North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth in a statement. "I believe her previous experience and success at a host of reputable private companies will translate well to municipal government."

The Town of North Hempstead is located in northern Nassau County with a population of 226,322 in the 2010 Census. The town is rated Aa1 with a stable outlook by Moody's Investors Service.
