BRADENTON, Fla. - Atlanta-based IFS Securities Inc. hired former New York Gov. David Paterson as chief strategist of U.S. affairs.

Paterson, who works from New York, also serves as chairman of IFS's advisory board, the boutique independent broker-dealer firm said.

As chief strategist he will help position the IFS brand throughout the country and introduce IFS Securities to public companies, municipalities, pension funds, and other businesses and organizations, said IFS Securities president and chief executive officer Alex McKenzie.

"Governor Paterson is a significant asset to our organization and a welcome addition to our team," McKenzie said.

A lifelong governmental and political figure, Paterson was the first African-American governor of New York, rising to the post from lieutenant governor after Eliot Spitzer became embroiled in a scandal and resigned in 2008.

Prior to becoming lieutenant governor, Paterson was a New York State senator and before that he worked in the Queen's County district attorney's office.

He received a bachelor's degree from Columbia University and a law degree from Hofstra Law School.

IFS Securities Inc. is a full-service independent broker-dealer offering financial advisory, brokerage support, equity research, fixed income and equity trading, and investment banking services. Client accounts are cleared through Raymond James Financial Inc. or Sterne, Agee & Leach Inc.

The firm has 32 offices in 17 states and Puerto Rico. IFS said it has participated in more than $8 billion municipal transactions this year.
