Hughes Named Orange County, Calif., Audit Director

LOS ANGELES — Peter Hughes has been appointed to a three-year term as Orange County, Calif.'s performance audit director.

The Orange County Board of Supervisors announced on Aug. 26 that Hughes, who had been working in an interim capacity, was named to the permanent position.

He replaces Philip Cheng, who left in April.

Hughes will be responsible for conducting independent performance reviews of county operations to assess efficiency, effectiveness, accountability and compliance with state and federal laws, board policy and industry best practices. He will work directly with the Board of Supervisors and in consultation with the county executive. His annual salary will be $192,000.

Prior to the promotion, Hughes had worked as the county's director of internal audit since July 1999.

"Peter Hughes is a dedicated county employee who I helped hire in 1999 as Internal Audit Director," said Todd Spitzer, chairman of the board of supervisors. "His distinguished record speaks for itself and he is the right person to revitalize Performance Audit."
