Harrisburg City Treasurer Cleared to Work

The latest city treasurer appointee in Harrisburg, Pa., is cleared to work after city officials were satisfied that he lives there.

"I am eager to get to work and look forward to developing a strong relationship with both the council and the mayor," Tyrell Spradley said in a statement released by Mayor Eric Papenfuse. "They can count on my full support in safeguarding the office of the city treasury."

According to Papenfuse press secretary Joyce Davis, Spradley refuted allegations that he does not live in Pennsylvania's 49,000-population capital. He moved to the city in early 2013 and has remained a resident since, Davis said.

Spradley acknowledged an oversight in neglecting to get his business licensed and to pay the estimated $10 mercantile tax. Davis, though, said he has corrected the oversight and his business is now fully licensed, the mercantile tax paid.

John Campbell resigned from the part-time, $20,000-per-year position in September when Dauphin County District Attorney Ed Marsico charged him stealing money from two nonprofit organizations. Campbell's would-be replacement, Timothy East, withdrew last month amid revelations of his personal bankruptcy.

Harrisburg avoided bankruptcy last year by crafting a recovery plan that erased more than $600 million of debt.
