CHICAGO — Public finance attorney Maribel Mata Benedict has joined Detroit-based law firm Miller Canfield in the firm's Chicago office.

Mata Benedict moves to Miller as principal from Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP in Chicago. She has 15 years of experience serving as bond, underwriter and borrower counsel, according to Miller Canfield.

She's joining a team of four attorneys at the Chicago office, including Darryl Davidson, Paul Durbin and David Schaffer, a principal who joined the firm last week.

"We're delighted to have Maribel join our expanding team in Chicago," said Michael McGee, Miller Canfield's CEO, in a statement. "She is one of the nation's leading lawyers focusing on tax-exempt and taxable financings for governments. Adding a lawyer of Maribel's caliber to our outstanding public finance team is very gratifying."

The hire comes a few weeks after Miller Canfield hired 10 attorneys from the law firm of Kubasiak Fylastra Thorpe & Rotunno, as well as four other attorneys with various specialties.

Mata Benedict is president of Women in Public Finance and is on the steering committee of the National Association of Bond Lawyers. She wrote "Public Private Partnerships — A Primer," in NABL's Blue Book.

Miller Canfield served as Detroit's local bankruptcy counsel. The firm has 250 lawyers and 16 offices in five countries.
