Smith joined the firm in an of counsel role last month. His nearly three decade law career began at Chapman and Cutler LLP. He later went to work for Ice Miller LLP, opening the firm's Chicago office in 1997.

Smith later took a two year break to work on the development of affordable housing but decided to return to the practice of law in 2009 joining the former Peck Shaffer & Williams LLP, now Dinsmore & Shohl. Smith moved over to Thompson Coburn LLP in 2014.

"We are delighted to have Tom Smith join" the firm in Chicago, said attorney Matt Lewin, chair of public finance in Chicago. "Tom brings with him his wealth of experience in all aspects of public finance, and particularly in multifamily housing, and is one of the most respected, and not to mention well-liked, practitioners in the state."

Smith joins a team of 45 public finance attorneys in Greenberg Traurig's offices across the country.

Smith focuses primarily on private activity bonds and his experience spans roles as bond counsel, underwriter's counsel, issuer's counsel, borrower's counsel and investor's counsel. He brings with him a background in multifamily housing transactions and work with numerous state housing authorities and local governments.

The firm said Smith also brings with him significant experience on financings for nonprofit entities, small issue manufacturing companies, senior living providers, higher educational institutions and developers of economic development projects.
