Prelim Jan. U. of Mich. Index at 98.1 vs. 98.2 in Dec.

The University of Michigan's preliminary January consumer sentiment index reading was 98.1, compared to the final December 98.2 and the preliminary December 98.0, according to market sources.

The expectations index was 88.9, compared to the final December 89.5 and the preliminary December 88.9.

The current conditions index was 112.5, compared to the final December 111.9 and the preliminary December 112.1.

Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted a 98.5 reading for the main index, 90.2 for expectations and 111.7 for current conditions.

The five-year inflation expectation index was 2.5%, compared to 2.3% in December, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 2.6%, compared to 2.2% in December.

The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
