October New Home Sales Rise 0.7% to 458,000 Annual Rate

Sales of new single-family homes grew 0.7% to a 458,000 seasonally adjusted annual rate in October, according to data released by the Commerce Department Wednesday.

The increase came after a revised 0.4% gain to a 455,000 rate in September, originally reported as a 0.2% increase to 467,000.

Thomson Reuters' poll of economists had predicted a 471,000 sales level for September.

Sales of new homes were 1.8% better than the 450,000 rate in October 2013, Commerce said.

The supply of new homes at the current sales rate rose to 5.6 months from 5.5 months.

At the end of October, the number of new homes on the market grew to 212,000 from 210,000.

The unadjusted average price of a new single-family home surged to $401,100 from $314,200.

Meanwhile, the unadjusted median price rose to $305,000 from $261,700 in the previous month.
