N.Y. Fed: Service Sector Activity Levels Off

The New York region's service sector activity leveled off, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York's September Business Leaders Survey, released Tuesday.

The business activity index fell to 1.63 from 16.15 in August, the business climate index widened to negative 11.38 from negative 3.03, the employment index slid to 14.05 from 21.88, the wages index climbed to 34.15 from 33.33, the prices paid index fell to 45.08 from 50.39, the prices received index increased to 18.03 from 14.73, and the capital spending index slumped to 12.40 from 15.63.

The future business activity index gained to 36.89 from 31.06 in August, the business climate index rose to 22.76 from 12.98, the employment index dipped to 15.65 from 18.03, the wages index fell to 28.57 from 32.79, the prices paid index declined to 47.83 from 55.28, the prices received index grew to 29.82 from 24.39, and the capital spending index decreased to 10.43 from 14.75.

Respondents to the Business Leaders Survey, which the Fed calls "a close cousin of our Empire State Manufacturing Survey," come from New York, northern New Jersey, and southwestern Connecticut.
