Jobless Claims Rise 10,000 to 277,000 in Sept. 26 Week

WASHINGTON — The latest U.S. initial unemployment claims rose by 10,000 to 277,000 in the Sep. 26 week, 4,000 claims above expectations from the MNI survey of forecasters.

Despite the week-to-week increase in jobless claims, the four-week moving average fell by 1,000 to 270,750. Claims went unrevised for the Sep. 19 week at 267,000.

There were no special factors this week and unadjusted initial claims dropped by 3,856 to 215,483.

Four states, California, Kansas, Texas and New York, posted increases in claims of more than 1,000 per state. California posted the largest gain with a raise in claims by 3,725 due to layoffs in the service and agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting industries.

Seasonally-adjusted continuing claims fell by 53,000 to 2.191 million for the Sep. 19 week (The series lags in reporting by one week).
