Friedlander Let Go in Morgan Stanley Smith Barney Restructuring

George Friedlander was among those let go under the Morgan Stanley Smith Barney restructuring last week, according to sources familiar with the situation.

The joint venture last week reportedly laid off 200 people as part of its integration of the two businesses that began in 2009.

Friedlander, who was head of municipal strategy at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, has been writing a weekly report on the municipal bond market for more than 30 years.

He worked at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney or its predecessor firms for 34 years.

A spokesman for the firm would not comment on or confirm any individual names of people let go or retained.

“We’re in the process of combining and integrating two firms,” the spokesman said. “That involves a certain amount of reorganization, and we’re close to the end of that process.”

Morgan Stanley Smith Barney was created last year when Morgan Stanley bought a 51% stake in Citigroup’s wealth management division.

Friedlander had been at Citi before that deal.

The business manages $1.7 trillion in assets.

According to reports last week, most of the jobs Morgan Stanley Smith Barney cut were brokerage support roles, such as marketing.

The company also added 150 private bankers and 35 sales and trading staff, according to press reports.
